@2014 WORLD BEER CUPBy Mike Shess, Publisher, West Coaster beer magazine and website--Led by North Park’s Mike Hess Brewing Co.’s Gold Medal for its Habitus (Rye Beer) fellow San Diego brewers earned 11 medals at the 2014 World Beer Cup.

Habitus is a very drinkable, high gravity, crisp and spicy rye IPA, hopped generously throughout the brew process and then dry-hopped with over a pound per barrel of Sterling and Chinook hops. Earthy and spicy notes from both the hops and the rye malt, complimented by the floral and piney aromatics.

Fellow San Diego World Beer Cup winners were announced at the Gala Awards Dinner/Ceremony, which took place following the 2014 Craft Brewers Conference.

Out of 94 categories of beer, San Diegans won four gold medals, four Silver medals, and three Bronze medals. In total, 1,447 breweries entered 4,918 beers from 62 countries. 220 judges from 32 countries determined the winners. The San Diego County winners and their categories are listed below. In addition to winning two medals, Coronado Brewing Company was awarded World Beer Cup Champion Brewery and Brewmaster in the Mid-Sized Brewing Company category.

PRESTIGIOUS AWARD (Best of Show) Coronado Brewing Company was named Best Mid-Sized Brewery and  Brewmaster at the World Beer Cup Competition held this weekend in Denver Colo.
