PLEIN AIR PAINTINGS WITH A PASSION

Plein Air painting by San Diego's Mark Fehlman
SUMMER LONG EXHIBITION--San Diego’s historic neighborhoods are where you’ll find wonderful landscapes hanging on the walls of vintage craftsman bungalows.  Landscape art (also called plein air) paintings are synonymous with the Arts & Crafts era (1890-1930).  But, you don’t have to own a bungalow to appreciate landscape paintings.

Art lovers are in luck as this summer La Jolla’s Riford Library is hosting a first rate show: “Fresh Paint California: A Plein Air Art Exhibition” will be held today through October 15, 2014.

It’s the third annual invitational plein air and studio landscape art show presented by the Riford Library Art Gallery. The exhibition will showcase some of California’s finest plein air painters, including Ken Auster, John Budicin,  Mark Fehlman, Robin Hall, Carolyn Hesse Low, Ken Goldman, Raye Anne Marks, Rita Pacheco, Ray Roberts, Randall Sexton, Jim Wodark, Toni Williams, Jeff Yeomans, and Patricia Jasper Clark. Plein air artists paint outdoors to capture the spontaneity and transience of light as it is reflected on the natural world.

The exhibition includes paintings done in outdoor locations, as well as ones painted in studio environments after the artist has created smaller outdoor studies.

“All are inspired by the physical beauty of California and the desire to capture the light and color unique to the atmosphere of our state,” said exhibition organizer Patricia Jasper Clark.  “These award-winning artists from throughout California paint quickly and draw on instinct and impression to record the natural world around them,” she said, noting all pieces in the exhibition are available for sale.

Fresh Paint California will be open to the public free of charge during library hours.  The La Jolla Riford Library is open Mondays 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Tuesdays 12:30 – 8 p.m.; Wednesdays 12:30 – 8 p.m.; Thursdays 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Fridays 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Saturdays 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; and Sundays from 1-5 p.m.  The library is located at 7555 Draper Ave., La Jolla.

The La Jolla Library Art Gallery produces four public exhibitions annually.  A portion of all sales benefits the library’s cultural programming and supports the Friends of the La Jolla Library in such efforts as extending library hours.
