UPDATE, UPDATE / BALBOA PARK CONCERTS


The summer Bird Park concerts series folks have made a band change.  New group for Saturday, June 28 is the one,
the only 145th Street Blues Band.  Music starts at 5:30 pm.  Upas & 28th/Thorn Street.

FUN DATES—Lots to do for free in Balboa Park and its amazing neighboring ‘hoods.  Here’s what we mean:

NORTH PARK BIRD PARK CONCERTS (Upas to Redwood along 28th Street)
FREE thanks to all those who pitched in bucks to bring the music.  All concerts at same location and between 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
--June 28: CHANGE: Now playing The 145th Street Blues Band. 
--July 12: The Ballad Mongers (Indie rock)
--July 26: Mark Jackson Band (Country)
--Aug. 9:  Bayou Bros. with Robin Henkel (Zydeco/folk)

SUMMER INTERNTIONAL ORGAN FESTIVAL
FREE all performances.  Evening concerts begin at 7:30 pm
-- June 30: Monte Maxwell, Chapel Organist and Director of Chapel Music and the Midshipmen Symphony Orchestra at the United States Naval Academy, with special guests Navy Band Southwest.
-- July 7: R. Jelani Eddington, award-winning theatre organist who has toured throughout the world.
-- July 14: Wyatt Smith, passionate rising star of the organ world and graduate student at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, joined by soprano Priti Gandhi.
-- July 21: Robert Plimpton, San Diego Civic Organist Emeritus and resident organist at the First United Methodist Church, known for his impressive mastery of the Spreckels Organ and his contagious laugh, along with special guest Marco Labastida, tenor.
-- July 28: Sven Ingvart Mikkelsen from his native Denmark, where he is the organist at Frederiksborg Castle Church in Hillerød.  Joining Mikkelsen is Jens Romer, also from Denmark, who will perform on the bombarde.
--Aug. 4: Stewart Wayne Foster, Director of Music and Organist of the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach, Florida.  Foster was previously Organist in Residence for the First Congregational Church in Los Angeles, home of the world’s largest church organ.
-- Aug. 11: Kimberly Marshall, performer, scholar, and Professor of Music at Arizona State University where she oversees the graduate organ studio.
-- Aug. 18 brings the always-popular Silent Movie Night featuring Scottish organist Donald McKenzie accompanying two silent film classics: Chasing Choo Choos with Monty Banks (1927, 23 min.), a madcap, runaway train adventure, and One Week (1928, 22 min.), a Buster Keaton comedy classic in which newly married Buster is given a build yourself house by his uncle…and one week to build it.
--Aug. 25: Festival season finale, Come Dancing! with San Diego Civic Organist Carol Williams and special guests, the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra.

--July 31: Afrotruka -  Salsa Orquestra.
