CUBA SEGMENT 26 / WHO TOOK THAT ICONIC IMAGE OF CHE GUEVARA?

This iconic photograph of Ernesto "Che" Guevara was taken in 1960 by photographer Alberto Korda
Editor’s note: On a daily basis from June 1 thru June 30, 2015 Pillar to Post online magazine is featuring articles, photos and insights resulting from a recent group tour, an adventure we dubbed: the April 23 Brigade’s Tour of Cuba 2015.

“GUERILLERO HEROICA,” 1960

Alberto Korda 1928-2001
The more we traveled around Cuba the more we kept seeing the same image of Che Guevara on bicycles, billboards, shop walls, T-shirts and posters.  The image is everywhere, but like so many iconic images the name of the photographer is often lost to the ages.

But with a little research and thanks to the late great Life Magazine, we discovered the image was originally taken in 1960 at a funeral service for slain Cuban revolutionaries.  The photographer, Alberto Korda, titled the photograph “Guerrillero Heroica.”

The image was published in Life Magazine after Guevara’s death in 1967.  Reportedly, Korda never received a penny for his photograph.
