RETRO FILES / APOLLO 11 /JULY 16 – JULY 24, 1969

Historic image was taken from space aboard the LEM moon landing “Eagle” module by astronaut and moonwalker Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin during orbit of the moon.  Aldrin’s shot shows the command module “Columbia.”
Call it one of the most amazing promises kept by an American president when NASA’S Apollo 11 mission to land two men on the moon was accomplished this week

in 1969.  The amazing engineering and astronomical event happened as President John F. Kennedy predicted in 1961: "before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."

Today, we celebrate that promise kept to the nation and the world.
