COFFEE BEANS & BEINGS / MORE USES FOR COFFEE GROUNDS

GUEST BLOG / by Susan Cameron, OrganicLesson.com--Serial coffee drinkers may be happy to know that the leftover coffee grounds from a fresh brew of coffee can be reused in a number of practical ways. You might have already heard that coffee grounds is a great ingredient for compost piles and also works great for enhancing the taste of food like meat and desserts. Well, as the following infographic highlights, you may be surprised to know that coffee grounds contain properties that could be beneficial in many other ways.

Exfoliate the skin.
Coffee grounds make a great ingredient for a natural body scrub due to its abrasive texture. You can mix it up with other natural ingredients such as honey, oil, or brown sugar to create an exfoliating scrub. Gently rubbing such ingredients on your body can help leave a natural glow on your skin. One note of caution. Avoid using coffee grounds on your facial skin unless it is finely grinded. Your facial skin is one of the most sensitive parts of the body so it may do more damage than good if you rub it with coarse or medium coffee grounds.

Preventing Skin Inflammation
In addition to its exfoliating properties, coffee grounds also contain antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties. If you have skin blemishes or pimples on a regular basis then consider making your own natural face mask.
Mix up used coffee ground with whole milk, honey, and cocoa powder then apply a thin layer of the mixture on your face for around 15 minutes. Applying this natural face mask in the morning could help prevent all sorts of inflammatory skin issues.

Pest Repellents
Pest problems are a universal issue for all homeowners. Fortunately, the coffee scent that we absolutely love has the opposite effect for pests like slugs, snails, and fleas. Place a bowl of used or fresh coffee grounds near high-traffic pest areas. While it won't kill the pest, the scent would do enough to keep them well away.
Also, if you have a lot of standing water around the household that are prone to mosquito breeding then consider sprinkling some used coffee grounds in them. One study by researchers in Brazil found that used coffee grounds could help block the development of mosquito larvae. This simple fix could help prevent mosquito problems until the standing water is removed.
