WORLD ARCHITECTURE / FORD RIDES TO RESCUE

Last week in the news, the Ford Motor Company (founded in 1903) confirmed that it purchased the decaying Michigan Central Station in Detroit (built in 1913) and as a result saved it from being demolished by owners who said they would have torn it down a long time ago if it had not been registered on the National Historic Register.

The site is actually two buildings: lower standing train depot and an 18-story office structure.  For an excellent article on the history of the station, including architectural reviews of the time, historic photos and notes on the architect and builders click here.

RETRO FILES / REMINISCENCE OF GOLDEN BEACH
