COFFEE BEANS & BEINGS / MESSY, FAMOUS, CROWDED & EXACTLY WHAT IT PROMISES TO BE

At Café du Monde, powdered sugar goes wherever it wants. It lands on the beignets, the table, your shirt, your shoes, and possibly your permanent record. That is part of the charm. Nobody leaves clean, and nobody seems to mind. The place hardly needs reviewing anymore. It is part coffee stand, part New Orleans ritual, part tourist dare.

You sit down for café au lait and beignets, and within minutes the table looks as if a bakery exploded politely in your direction. That is the fun of it. Café du Monde does not ask you to admire fine dining technique or decode a menu. It gives you hot beignets, strong coffee, noise, movement, and the democratic pleasure of seeing everyone—locals, tourists, children, grown men pretending to be dignified—covered in the same white sugar.

It is messy, famous, crowded, and exactly what it promises to be.
