Just after 10 pm on this day in 1977, police arrested a 24-year-old postal worker who called himself the Son of Sam. One of New York City’s largest—and most frustrating—manhunts was finally over. For more than a year David Berkowitz had terrorized New York, murdering six people and injuring seven more in a series of eight shootings while taunting investigators and journalists with cryptic letters. He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 365 years in prison. At 73, he is serving six consecutive life sentences at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in New York. Berkowitz discussed his lonely, troubled youth, his prison routine and his work as a clerk in the prison library. He accepted responsibility for the six “Son of Sam” murders but continued to describe the shootings in terms of demons and his desire at the time to “appease the devil.” Now professing to be a born-again Christian, Berkowitz expressed remorse, spoke of seeking God’s forgiveness and said he hoped his story might warn young people away from Satanism and violence.
