By Thomas Shess /PillartoPost.org coffee editor--Cafe Moto’s Indo Noir Bold Decaf proves that removing caffeine does not have to remove character. This is a serious dark roast with the depth, aroma, and satisfying weight usually missing from decaf coffee.
The first impression is wow, where have you been bold and full-bodied, with a dark, smoky profile that isn't harsh. There is plenty of roast flavor, yet the coffee remains smooth and balanced from the first sip to the finish. It has enough richness to stand up well to milk or cream, but I prefer it black, where its character comes through most clearly. Warm it up an hour later and you have lost the edge. What impressed me most is how complete it tastes.
Many decafs seem thin, muted, or vaguely unfinished, as though something essential disappeared along with the caffeine. Indo Noir avoids that problem entirely. It delivers the warmth and intensity of a proper dark roast without the bitterness that can make some bold coffees tiring after half a cup.
