The idea for this column came from Yelp, where reviewers have been discussing a Solana Beach, CA coffeehouse with an unusual addition: a colony of resident rabbits.
Grange Garden Outdoor opened in 2021 at 240 South Cedros Avenue in the Cedros Design District. It combines an outdoor coffee bar, garden patio and supervised rabbit enclosure.
Next door are the Cottage Café, at 214 South Cedros Avenue, and a small market selling plants, antiques and European-style home furnishings. The outdoor café serves organic, small-batch coffee, espresso drinks, matcha, pastries and a limited food menu. Seating is spread among garden tables, umbrellas and potted plants.
Customers may watch the rabbits from the patio without paying for an encounter. Those who want closer contact must make a reservation. Supervised visits currently begin at $22 per person for 20 minutes and $25 for 30 minutes. Children younger than five are not permitted inside the enclosure but may participate through a separate “bunny basket” visit.
Friday and Saturday night sessions are offered from 6 to 9 p.m.
The rabbits may be the attraction, but comments about the coffee are generally favorable. Yelp reviewer Siri G. put it plainly: “I only ordered a latte, but it was really good.” She also praised the range of seating, including tables suitable for individuals and larger parties.
Owner Melissa Biggs Clark told San Diego Magazine that Grange Garden began primarily as a retail operation. That changed in 2024 when a social-media post showing a customer holding one of Clark’s therapy rabbits received 1.4 million views in three days.
Lines formed, staffing expanded and the rabbit area had to be enlarged and regulated. Clark later established a nonprofit organization that reportedly rehomed more than 100 rabbits during its first year.
Grange Garden is not a conventional coffeehouse, and visitors seeking a quiet place to work may want to avoid peak family hours. For everyone else, it offers good coffee in a pleasant outdoor setting—and the rabbits provide something no ordinary neighborhood café can match.
