FRIDAY IN FRANCE / VAN GOGH COUNTRY

    ORIGINAL SKETCH

The Painting (below)

Vincent Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night is one of the most celebrated works of art in the world, painted in September 1888 during the artist’s time in Arles, France. The painting captures the enchanting atmosphere of an evening in a small French town, showcasing Van Gogh’s characteristic style with vivid colors and dynamic brushstrokes. Notably, the artwork is devoid of black, demonstrating Van Gogh's mastery of color theory to create depth and contrast using a palette of blues, yellows, and greens. The piece is both a celebration of light and a study of nighttime life, with its depiction of warm, inviting lamplight against a deep, starry sky.

The Café

The café depicted in Van Gogh’s painting still exists in Arles today, nestled in the same narrow alleyway. While the structure itself has remained largely unchanged, the venue has undergone numerous transformations over the decades, with several operators attempting to recreate the ambiance of the painting. Unfortunately, none of these ventures have succeeded long-term, and as of the end of 2024, no café is in operation that directly mimics the iconic artwork. Visitors to Arles can still stroll through the alleyway and recognize the setting immortalized in Van Gogh’s work, making it a popular pilgrimage site for art enthusiasts and historians alike.

This enchanting Provençal town boasts treasures like the UNESCO-listed Roman amphitheater and Alyscamps necropolis. Arles is forever linked to Vincent van Gogh, who painted over 300 works here, capturing its golden light, vivid landscapes, and bustling streets. Strolling through Van Gogh’s haunts, such as the former Café Terrace at Night and Langlois Bridge, feels like stepping into his masterpieces.
