THE FOODIST / (RE)INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO SAN DIEGO’S HISTORIC SOUTH PARK & NEW FOODIE HITS

FUN FAMILY EVENT AHEAD.

An active but not overbearing group of community leaders are making San Diego’s South Park neighborhood a better place to live.  Click here to see just a few of the many upcoming events that make South Park such a vibrant and diverse neighborhood.

For example next Saturday night, South Park is hosting its quarterly Walkabout on March 16, 2019 from 6pm – 10pm.  The main action is along Fern and 30th between Beech and Juniper Streets.

Organizers tout the South Park Walkabout as a quarterly fun-filled evening festival that showcases all the unique and independent businesses within South Park. They promise complimentary treats, live entertainment and the proverbial much, much more.

Given the chilly spring, the walkabout is a perfect time to bundle up and stroll one of San Diego’s oldest but still spry neighborhoods.

Two newer businesses at Grape and Fern St. are Seven Seas Coffee and Roastery and Fernside Restaurant and Bar.  Both are new and next door to the always delicious Piacere Mio restaurant.  On this day, you’ll want to make a reservation as Piocere is always booked on walkabout days.

The walkabout presents an opportunity to see what impresario Matteo Cattaneo is up to at 30th and Juniper.  He began with the monster success story with his Buona Forchetta Restaurant (30th and Beech) and now is involved in two new tasty ventures at 30th and Juniper.  First, Matteo is turning the old Rebecca’s coffee house site into a yet-to-be-named Italian bakery and breakfast place while partnering with Antonio Kawage to open Carbon, a wood-smoke BBQ concept up the street on 30th.  Both concepts are expected to open later this Spring.

Sadly, Scoop, the ice cream store is gone at 30th & Juniper but no word as to what will replace it.

But what is open at that busy corner are the growing and popular bookstore The Book Catapult and the understated Curryosity, an Indian cuisine restaurant that deserves support from those of us with international tastebuds.
