Opening game of the 2023 Donna Hughes Memorial
80+Baseball Tournament in Canton, Ohio.
SAVE THE DATE
Are you an 80-year-old youngster looking to play tournament wood bat baseball (not softball)?
If so, the 3rd annual Donna Hughes 80 & Over baseball tournament will be played at the Thurman Munson Ballpark in Canton, Ohio this 2024 September 9-thru-14.
“Come join us,” says tourney founder George Hughes, who organized the event in honor of his late wife. “We’ll have 6 teams this year.”
Players come from all parts of the country. Three are from San Diego County.
“Good Lord willing and if the creak in my knee don’t arise I will join fellow San Diegans Joe Kerr and Al Estrada to play for the 80+ San Antonio Red Sox team,” says longtime MSBL manager and player Tom Shess.
“Tourney organizer George Hughes is beloved in senior amateur baseball circles nationally,” according to Mens Senior Baseball League players and officials. “Don’t expect a circus out there—these gentlemen play good hard American hardball like they have for—a long time. They are national treasures on the diamond.”
Fellow San Diego 80+ player Joe Kerr, who played in last year’s Hughes Tournament, says “Yes, we are playing real amateur baseball on a regulation field but it is more than that…as players we take it all in being on a baseball field, breathing fresh air, smelling the grass, smelling the leather of your glove, and being with friends. It’s OK to be 80 we’re at peace and having fun!”
And these hardballers have the satisfaction of knowing they’re the best baseball players in America for their age group.
Champions all.
