Here's a typical repair fair in action, where wannabe McGivers can show off. |
The following is not a new idea, but it still is worthy of other neighborhoods to pick up on the event. A recent event was held in Walnut Creek, CA, a suburb city in the San Francisco Bay Area was called a Repair Café, where residents are invited to bring broken or torn items.
Repair cafes and fix-it clinics are popular all across the country. Events like this potentially saves a useable item from being tossed into the landfill. The usual items can include mechanical toys, electronic and digital things, clothing to be sewn (that’s an important repair); wood items, broken jewelry, collapsed bird houses, bikes and you name it.
Most such events are staffed by volunteers. No guarantees can be made. Events are free but a good cause donation is suggested. Bring the idea up at your next community meeting. Perfect for a political candidate to host a repair fair demonstrating he/she can get things fixed. Or a school fundraiser or Boy Scout event or like the senior gated community of Rossmoor has planned forApril 19, 2024.
