SUNDAY REVIEW / CHURCHILL'S UNSUNG SECRET

ANOTHER BRIT HIT—PBS has done it again, with “Churchill’s Secret,” which airs tonight (8 pm not the usual 9 pm) on Masterpiece.  Brilliant actors abound in this 1952 true life drama Michael Gambon, Lindsay Duncan and Romola Garai.

Actor Michael Gambon shines brilliantly in his role as 78 year-old Winston Churchill in the PBS’s remarkable drama “Churchill’s Secret,” which will air on Masterpiece Theatre September 11.

Based on Jonathan Smith’s 2015 novel, the PBS drama was directed by Charles Sturridge and unfolds in 1953, when Churchill was in his second go-around as Britain’s Prime Minister.

The secret is a true incident in the Prime Minister’s life and the transformation from novel to television is simply riveting thanks its cast, writers and the work of the production company.

It airs at an earlier time 8 pm tonight on PBS.

Well worth an advance peek without spoiling the story is to watch the interplay between Lady Churchill (Lindsay Duncan) and the nurse (Romola Garai) who is charged with assisting in the PM’s recovery.
