1PIX=1K WORDS / ART OF WAR

Photo: Phyllis Shess www.pillartopost.org
Performance artist Chris Burden’s 1987 installation of 625 tiny models represents the entire U.S. submarine fleet dating from the late 1890s, when subs entered the Navy’s arsenal, to the late 1980s.  Now at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Burden (1946-2015) suspended the cardboard models on monofilaments from the ceiling, placing them at various heights so that as a group they appear to be a school of fish swimming through the ocean of the gallery space.
