THE FOODIST / COOKIES ALONG THE COAST

COOKIE CENTRAL. “Big Red” houses the Cayucos operation at the corner of North Ocean Avenue and D Street.

Since December 2008 sisters Trisha and Christa Hozie have been baking cookies for a living. That year is when they opened a specialty food shop on the main coastal highway through the beach town of Cayucos, California. One of the shop’s offerings was brown butter sea salt cookies.

A month later, sales response to the sea salt cookies was such that the sisters phased out the food shop and the Brown Butter Sea Salt Cookie Company was born. Since then, the passion for these cookies has only continued to grow. In the fall of 2013, a second retail shop opened in downtown Paso Robles. Six years later, in the fall of 2019 another shop opened in San Luis Obispo.

To date, Brown Butter Sea Salt Cookies remain the mainstay of the and are still made by hand at the original bakery in Cayucos. Realizing they opened in less populated part of the state, the business wisely added a website to deliver its cookies nationwide. Product line: Click here.

By the time, we learned the sisters had created a limited edition Bourbon Brown Butter Sea Salt cookies they had sold out. The cookies were baked with Maker’s Mark bourbon and a hint of clove and paprika. Spice cookies are about to debut for fall. Check the website. Pandemic update: Only the Cayucos and Paso Robles shops are open. Expect San Luis Obispo shop to open soon.
