THE BREWSPAPER / IS BELL BEER THE BEST?

Best brew from Kalamazoo!

E
ach year Zymurgy magazine, the official national publication of the American HomeBrewers Assn., polls its 45,000 allied members to pick the best craft beer in America.

Tough task.

And as Food & Wine magazine writer Mike Pomeranz points out it is a flawed way to name the best beer among beer geek circles.  But, no other better way has emerged.

This year’s winner (2nd year running) is Bell’s Brewery, Inc., a Kalamazoo, Michigan independent brewer, who has knocked perennial top spot holder Russian River brewery off the lofty “best” pedestal.

Bell’s Two Hearted Ale the brewery’s signature American-style IPA swiped the top spot from the legendary Californian double IPA Russian River Pliny the Elder, which once again finished second this year after holding the top spot from 2009 to 2016.

Bell's Brewery, Inc. began in 1985 with a 15 gallon soup kettle and has grown into a regional craft brewery that employs more than 500 people over a 33 state area, in addition to Puerto Rico and Washington DC.

TWO HEARTED ALE TWO HEARTED ALE
Brewed with 100% Centennial hops from the Pacific Northwest and named after the Two Hearted River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, this IPA is bursting with hop aromas ranging from pine to grapefruit from massive hop additions in both the kettle and the fermenter.

Perfectly balanced with a malt backbone and combined with the signature fruity aromas of Bell's house yeast, this beer is remarkably drinkable and well suited for adventures everywhere.
