HUMBLE TO NOT SO HUMBLE—Today being President Carter's (1924) birthday, Pillar to Post blog has compiled a list of Presidential homes. Prior to arriving at the White House, the earliest U.S. Presidents lived in fairly posh surroundings, however the majority of the Presidents lived in upper middle class homes. Perhaps, the three most modest homes belonged
to President Lincoln, who was raised on a Kentucky Farm, and the clapboard homes
of President Fillmore and Hoover. The
more opulent were the Roosevelt estates of Theodore and Franklin respectively.
Forty-two of 44 shared the White
House, except for President Washington (it wasn’t completed until President
John Adams moved in) and President Cleveland was elected twice but not in
concurrent terms.
And, the White House is represented
as President Ford’s home because his original home in Omaha, Nebraska burned to
the ground.
The Adams Presidents shared Peacefield
in Quincy, MA. The Bush Presidents for
about five years lived in the same home in Midland, Tx during the childhood of
George W. Bush.
