Hey, Janice what do you think of the Rock Hall of Fame's list of 500 songs that helped shape rock n roll? |
SONGS THAT SHAPED ROCK—Driving home I heard the DJ on Pandora say “Layla”
was one of the 500 songs that helped shape rock according to the
Cleveland-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Immediately Pillar to Post blog had to know who else was on that
list? Well, get thee to WWW. James
Henke, chief curator for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with the help of music
writers and critics, selected 500 songs (not only rock songs obviously) that
they believe have been most influential in shaping rock and roll. The Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame list is alphabetical by artist.
Given the nature of media
inspired “best of” lists someone always gets left out or downplayed. Eric Clapton, for his huge body of work was
posted for his version of JJ Cale’s “After Midnight.” One mention for Clapton seems a gyp, however Janice
Joplin, at least for her “Bobby McGee” (with Full Tilt Boogie backup) didn’t
make the list by name or did Linda Ronstadt for anything. Sigh, life’s full of
flaws, who knows the cause...? Fleetwood
Mac gets one pick (Monkees get two?) while Woodie Guthrie gets three, including
his off-the-chart rocker “Pretty Boy Floyd?” Kudos go to the hall for the
energy to compile the list, but so-so points for content. Come on, man, don’t
mess with rock n’ roll: give us the A-list.
