US. / CUBA CAPITOL DOMES UNDER REPAIR
W hen our tour group drove by El Capitolio (National Capitol building the deposed) we noticed it was under repair. Like so many other buildings in Havana it is Being refurbished. Cuba's Capitol has a remarkable resemblance to the US Capitol in Washington DC. Coincidently, as of January, 2015, Both Were covered with scaffolding.
The Capitol is Being groomed to be the home of Cuba's National Assembly. Historically, architects Raul Otero and Eugenio Built in the Neo-classical style designed it, With construction beginning on April 1, 1926 (completed 1929).
In 1959, The Capitol Housed the Cuban Congress, but Castro When disbanded the Congress, it Eventually Became the National Library of Science and Technology as it is today.
As for the US Capitol, the scaffolding was part of This Winter's restoration of the iconic dome. This project is tasked to stopping the current level of deterioration in the Dome's cast iron as well as Ensuring the protection of the inside of the Dome and Rotunda. The last significant external renovation of the Dome was Performed on the dome's ironwork in 1959-60 When Castro was busy tossing out Cuba's Congress.
